Homework at Harbottle First School

Please see below for information regarding our homework policy.

Homework at Harbottle First School aims to:

  • Encourage independence: Helping children develop the self-discipline and responsibility needed for independent study.
  • Consolidate learning: Reinforcing basic skills in literacy and numeracy and preparing children for future learning.
  • Strengthen our home-school connection: Providing a way for parents to be involved and understand what their child is learning in school.
  • Practice essential skills: Reading, spelling, and math drills are common components to help children master fundamentals.
  • Extending interests: Providing opportunities for children to pursue their own personal interests through project-based tasks.

When children are completing homework we ask that it is done promptly and with a positive attitude.  We encourage children to put in their best effort, similar to what is expected in class.  Alongside this they develop pride in  the presentation of their work.  Please do not hesitate to take advice from their teacher on how to improve any homework.

When you are supporting your child to do homework, provide a suitable environment: A reasonably quiet, well-lit space with a clear table is recommended for children to work.  Please support and encourage your child, but allow them to complete the tasks themselves and give them lots of praise. If your child is struggling or you have concerns about the level of homework, contact school.

All homelearning that children complete will be rewarded with Class Dojo points.  In addition, every time a child reads to an adult at home and their journal has been completed, they move towards a reading prize in our Reading Challenge.  Reading books will be changed every ThursdayPlease note that children should reach each book three times.  This is to develop confidence, fluency and comprehension.
